CaptionStream support in Player Framework for Windows 8

Topics: Windows 8 Xaml

Hi all,

We've tested caption feature with the Microsoft sample movie below with TTML format caption.

Elephant dream

However, no subtitle can be shown.

The caption sample in the Player Framework could only load a seperate caption source xml file.
So, is caption stream not supported?

Thanks and Regards,

In-stream captions are currently not supported by the player framework but we're hoping to add this feature in the future.

As a side note: the advantages of in-stream captions for VOD are minimal and add a lot of extra complexity to the server-side process. Folks are more and more using out-of-stream (external) captions -- so long-term, you might consider using switching to external captions.

Thanks! We may consider using external captions in the future.

But at this moment, is there a schedule for in-stream captions feature to be available?

For thousands of existing movies, we may need huge effort to convert from in-streams to out-of-stream captions.

Hi Tim,

We've tried the released version 1.1 today.
It's found that the in-stream captions really works for JS!
However, it seems in-stream captions still not works for the XAML version of player. Is it expected?

The manifest we've tried is:
Elephant Dream

Thanks and Regards

This should work fine in Xaml. Note: We added a new sample to our sample app to demonstrate in-stream captions in Xaml and JS using the stream you referenced. Please take a look and hopefully it will shed some light on why it is not working in your app.
